Photo Curators At Work: Developing An Exhibit
Working as a curator is not just about acquiring works to be displayed in an exhibition. Having the job also means being a researcher, strategist, and communicator. It’s a plus if you’re also an artist or a photographer because this means you have a deep understanding of the artistic process. Some days, I just sit in the office sifting through thousands of images. On others, I have to acquire works from the photographers themselves and explain the project.

Curators have to fully understand the goal and the purpose of an exhibition. In some cases, it’s important to have an idea about the photographer’s style and work ethic especially when featuring his or her work exclusively. Creating an exhibit atmosphere that captures their artistry is key to help audiences understand their work and even what they stand for.
Planning, selecting, layouting, marketing, and finalizing what people will see in an exhibition are all part of the nitty-gritty of the development process. A curator is responsible for what people will see and feel when they look at the photographs. Above all these technicalities, my goal as a curator is to help people understand that the works displayed are worth their time and appreciation. Selecting what to display can take a lot of time and decision-making. With every exhibit, it is our wish is that the audiences will gain a new understanding and even passion through the displays.
