Photography 101: Three Basic Camera Composition Rules

Composition can make or break a photo. Poor photo composition can make a subject dull, but a well-positioned and well-lit scene can create a wonderful image from even the most ordinary situations. Here are three basic cameral composition rules to step up your photography game.

1. It doesn’t have to be complicated

There are all sorts of theories about composition from the simple ‘rule of thirds’ to the more complex ‘golden mean/ratio’, but if you focus strictly on any kind of formula, your photos will lose its spontaneity, it will come out scripted rather than natural.

Though these composition rules are fundamental, your creativity will still be your core guiding principle.

2. Simplify the scene

When you look at a scene in real life, your brain quickly picks out subjects of interest, but the camera doesn’t discriminate. It will capture everything in front of it. Your responsibility as a photographer is to declutter the scene so the subject will be focused in all its beauty. Move in closer to the subject to cut out parts that aren’t important in the scene.

3. Avoid the middle

This is more common among beginners because when you’re just starting out, it’s tempting to put whatever you’re shooting right in the center of the frame. This type of composition only works in symmetrical subjects such as the Taj Mahal. Putting subjects in the center produces static, boring pictures.
